Abstract

This talk was given during Open Access Week to raise awareness of issues in OA. Open access became important initially due to a sharp rise in journal costs while library budgets remained flat, even as the Internet greatly reduced the marginal cost of providing access to information. The “green” and “gold” models of open access are summarized, and finally issues of quality in open access, including “predatory” journals, are explored.
