dc.description | The Haiti Agroforestry Research Project was a program to encourage Haitian farmers to plant fast growing trees as a cash crop. This project was part of an overall plan by USAID to curb the devastating erosion which was washing the top soil into the sea. | en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Trees and their forest habitats have played a major role in creating a fertile environment in Haiti. The ecological fabric that has nurtured the soil and supported life for millennia gradually has been unraveled by human activities. Tree species cultivated here must supply valuable products and services and require low establishment costs. There is a collection of native and exotic species that plays an essential role in the agricultural landscape. Several of the more important ones are included in Part I. Part II compiles useful information of a more technical nature and covers a wider range of species. A reference section has been included for those interested in studying these tree species in greater depth. | en_US |
